The Knights of Columbus

COUNCIL 14663

ST. JOHN APOSTLE & EVANGELIST

BRIEF HISTORY

The Knights of Columbus is an organization of Catholic men dedicated to the principles of Charity, Unity, Fraternity, and Patriotism.  The founding of the Order was a fulfillment dream of a young priest, Father Michael J. McGivney.  On March 29, 1882, a charter was granted to the Knights of Columbus by the State of Connecticut "for purposes of rendering mutual aid and assistance to its members and their families."  The Order began with the first council consisting of 11 members.  Today there are over 14,000 councils with total membership in excess of 1.7 million Catholic men.

In Hawaii, it was through the persistence of a Schofield Barracks Army Captain (Chaplain) Father Lasalle E. Lenk, Msgr. Bernard J. Eikmeier, and Robert M Arrell, that permission was granted in 1959 by the Most Reverend James J. Sweeney, Bishop of Honolulu, for the Knights of Columbus to organize.  After 2-1/2 years of diligent work to meet organizational requirements, Our Lady of Peace Council 5000 was granted a charter and the first meeting was conducted on May 28,  1962.  During the intervening years, the Order in Hawaii has expanded to 21 councils (20 active and one inactive) plus the establishment of four Fourth Degree Assemblies for a total membership exceeding 1,200.

At St. John Apostle & Evangelist Church, the founding of a Council at St. John was a dream come true for Father Manuel Hewe through the efforts and dedication of Brother Clyde Sauget (First Grand Knight elected), the St. John Council was chartered, with 30 Brothers, as Council 14663 on November 14, 2008 and held its first official meeting on November 20, 2008.

MEMBERSHIP REQUIREMENTS

A candidate must be a practical Catholic gentleman who is 18 years of age or older.  A practical Catholic man is one who is in union with the Holy See and who practices the precepts of the Catholic Church.  Interested Catholic men should contact a Knight for additional information and enrollment application.  Also, member Knights will ask interested candidates to join the Order.  Current points-of-contact are:  Grand Knight Paul Thames, Brs. Clyde Sauget, Mark Ortorego, and Peter Kaeo.

Our Council meets usually once monthly on the second Tuesday of each month here at St. Johns at 7 PM.  We plan to have a table with a Knight Representative available at each Mass on the first weekend of each month for any person desiring to join the Knights or just wants information about the Knights.

The Knights also have a comprehensive insurance program for their members including Long Term Care insurance which is more and more needed as our population increases in age. This insurance is voluntary, not mandatory.
